Why Variant Pricing Is Critical for Magic

A dealer scans 200 Magic cards from a collection. One card catches their eye — an Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar (yes, real card). They look it up on TCGPlayer: normal printing is $0.50. They catalog it and move on. Hours later, someone buys the collection and points out: it was a Showcase version worth $8.50. The dealer just gave away a $8 card for $0.50.

This happens daily in Magic because variants matter. Extended Art, Showcase, Borderless, Retro Frame, Etched Foil, Gilded Foil — each carries its own price. A Normal Scalding Tarn is playable and costs $20. A Borderless Scalding Tarn is a collector\'s item and costs $60. Without perfect variant identification, you are leaving money on the table constantly.

InVelocity solves this with AI that sees what you see. Scan a card and instantly know its exact printing and correct market price. Build inventory confidence instead of fear.

Variant Detection Meets Business Intelligence

Everything you need to manage Magic inventory at scale.

AI Card Recognition Across 30+ Years

From Alpha to the latest set, InVelocity identifies every Magic card ever printed. The AI reads the card name, set symbol, artist signature, and border style to confirm the exact print. Works with full-art, borderless, extended art, showcase, retro frame, and every special edition.

Variant Detection (Showcase, Borderless, Extended Art)

An Extended Art Ragavan is not priced at the normal printing. InVelocity identifies Showcase versions, Borderless printings, Extended Art, Retro Frame, Etched Foil, Textured Foil, Gilded Foil, and Surge Foil. Each variant has its own TCGPlayer price.

Live TCGPlayer Prices Per Exact Variant

Scan a card and immediately see its TCGPlayer market price for that specific printing. See both foil and normal prices side-by-side. The app updates daily so your pricing is always current.

90-Day Price Trend Charts

Watch cards spike during spoiler season, cool off post-rotation, or climb steadily as competitive interest builds. Every card shows its price history so you know whether to hold for a peak or sell now.

Inventory Management with Cost Basis Tracking

Log what you paid for each card (or bulk price per card), and InVelocity automatically calculates your profit/loss. Flip a card at 20% profit? See it instantly. Spot your biggest winners and most disappointing holds.

eBay Listing from the Same Tool

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I scan a Magic card?

Open InVelocity, tap the camera icon, and point your phone at the card. Keep the card flat, well-lit, and in focus so the AI can read the card name, set symbol, and special edition details. The AI identifies the card and its exact printing. If uncertain, you confirm from a list of possible matches. Once confirmed, you see the TCGPlayer market price, price history, and foil/non-foil variants.

How accurate is variant detection for Magic cards?

InVelocity is trained on tens of thousands of Magic card images including all major variants. The AI analyzes visual cues like foil patterns, border styles, frame treatments, and set symbols to identify which version you own. For modern sets (especially Showcase and Extended Art editions), detection is highly accurate. For older variants or reprints where visual differences are subtle, the app shows you the top 3–5 possible matches so you can confirm. Over time, user corrections train the model further.

What is the price difference between a Showcase and normal printing?

Showcase variants typically cost 10–30% more than normal printings depending on demand. Extended Art Planeswalkers and rare creatures command even larger premiums — sometimes 2–3x the normal price. InVelocity shows prices for both side-by-side so you know exactly what variant you have and what it is worth. Missing the difference between a normal and Extended Art card is an easy $10–50 mistake when valuing a collection.

Can I track my collection's total value and profit/loss?

Yes. When you add a card to your inventory, you can log what you paid for it (or an average price if you bought in bulk). InVelocity calculates your cost basis and shows profit/loss for each card and your entire collection. You can filter by profitability to see which cards are performing well and which are underperforming. This is essential for making intelligent decisions about when to sell and which cards to hold.

Does InVelocity handle foil and non-foil pricing separately?

Completely. TCGPlayer lists foil and non-foil versions as separate products with separate prices. InVelocity identifies which version you have (foil vs. non-foil vs. etched foil) and pulls the correct price. A foil Modern Staple is worth 1.5–3x the non-foil version. Pricing both correctly is critical for dealers.

Can I scan and list multiple cards at once?

Yes. You can scan cards one at a time and bulk-upload them to your inventory. InVelocity then shows your entire collection with live pricing. When you are ready to sell, you can tag a subset of cards (e.g., all creatures over $5 value) and generate eBay listings for the whole batch. For dealers managing thousands of cards, this is how pricing scales.
